Justin Gaffrey resides in the Northwest Florida Coastal Community of Blue Mountain Beach. Locals know this area as South Walton or Scenic Highway 30A. He has been raised in the area and has lived most of his life in NW Florida. Justin started his adult life working in construction, design and eventually turned to the culinary industry where he worked as a chef and restaurateur.

In 2001, Justin decided that he did not enjoy the long hours and stress of the restaurant and started working on his creative endevour as a full-time artist. Justin first started working on art in a more folklore style. He then changed his style that reflects Van Gough’s vision of Starry Night and Sunflowers. During this time he concentrated on his own art form and that was the beginning of the thick impasto creations that live beyond the canvas. Justin has never had any formal art training, for he is a completely self-taught artist.

Justin's love for nature impacted his life and that is when he introduced the serene tone of the environment and animals that surrounded him. He started creating nests around 2010 and this began a more organic art form. In 2013, he introduced new materials into his work and started welding steel, using string for representation of the way he feel towards these pieces, and he also wrote poetry and created pieces to become the visual works of the poems.

Justin has toured all over the country showing his pieces along with outside galleries showcasing his works.  His works have been on exhibit in Nashville, TN, Miami, FL, St. Augustine, FL, New York, NY, Southampton, NY, Minneapolis, MN, Houston, TX, New Orleans, LA, and in the countries of Ireland and Russia.

"I have tapped into an old passion of mine, building with my hands. I now have a one of a kind furniture collection of tables and light pieces. I am also exploring the creation of culinary inspired pieces to showcase in the Blue Mountain Beach gallery and beyond. I feel that my career life is coming full circle with building furniture and creating pieces that coordinate with my passion and former position as a chef. "

FLORAL SERIES

WILDFLOWERS | POPPIES | SUNFLOWERS | ALL FLOWERS

Justin creates a Floral Series inspired by the world-travel he participates in, along with the many miles of trails he has hiked through his life time. He uses acrylic paint and sculpts wildflowers forming whimsical daisies, bright poppies and vibrant sunflowers. He creates the All Flowers compositions with the roses and accent flowers off canvas first and lets them dry on cookie sheets in racks, just as you would see in a bakery. Then he designs the All Flower compositions to where they favor beautiful artisan cake tops. His latest style are the Expressionist Floral series. These florals are elegantly designed and are more skewed for a modern take on florals.

NESTS | STILL LIFE | CONTEMPORARY

The evolution of the Nest is a special venture for Justin. The Nest represents the sacred family unit and protection. The Nest is usually made with natural and muted tones as much of the organic pieces are created. Justin loves nature and finds peace in nature that is why many of the animals in the still life collection are painted with peaceful and nature-like hues.

STAG | RABBIT | BEE | BIRD | HORSE

Justin's love for nature extends to animals too. His conceptual self-portrait series includes the Stag, Rabbit and Bee. He resonates with the Stag the most of all animals. He respects the graceful and peaceful nature of the Stag and appreciations that he is still strong and preserved. Justin calls the Rabbit, the Trickster. The Rabbit represents the witty and mischeivous side of himself. Justin dreams about Bees. Bees also represent community, communication and dedication to hard work.

Justin also creates the beautiful Still Life can be found along the Emerald Coast. Herons, Hummingbirds, and Bears just to name a few.

WELDED STEEL SCULPTURES

Justin started creating sculptures in 2013. Since he is a completely self-taught artist, it would only make sense that he would teach himself how to weld. His sculptures represent meaningful creations with materials used such as welded steel, acrylic, cypress wood block and panels, string and metal.
