Justin Gaffrey resides in the Northwest Florida Coastal Community of Blue Mountain Beach. Locals know this area as South Walton or 30A. He has been raised in the area and has lived most of his life in NW Florida. Justin started his adult life working in construction, design and eventually turned to the culinary industry where he worked as a chef and restaurateur.
In 2001, Justin decided that he did not enjoy the long hours and stress of the restaurant and started working on his creative endevour as a full-time artist. Justin first started working on art in a more folklore style. He then changed his style that reflects Van Gough’s vision of Starry Night and Sunflowers. During this time he concentrated on his own art form and that was the beginning of the thick impasto creations that live beyond the canvas. Justin has never had any formal art training, for he is a completely self-taught artist.
Justin's love for nature impacted his life and that is when he introduced the serene tone of the environment and animals that surrounded him. He started creating nests around 2010 and this began a more organic art form. In 2013, he introduced new materials into his work and started welding steel, using string for representation of the way he feel towards these pieces, and he also wrote poetry and created pieces to become the visual works of the poems.
Justin has toured all over the country showing his pieces along with outside galleries showcasing his works. His works have been on exhibit in Nashville, TN, Miami, FL, St. Augustine, FL, New York, NY, Southampton, NY, Minneapolis, MN, Houston, TX, New Orleans, LA, and in the countries of Ireland and Russia.
Justin's latest creative adventure resides in South Walton in Rosemary Beach, FL. He has opened a store named Curate that is a space to celebrate the creative stories of process. With Curate, Justin is exploring his own designing and creative process along with collaborating with other hand-made artist and makers. We have introduced makers of one of a kind intricate and small batch pieces from all over the world.
"I have tapped into an old passion of mine, building with my hands. I now have a one of a kind furniture collection of tables and light pieces. I am also exploring the creation of smaller and culinary inspired pieces to showcase into Curate. I feel that my career life is coming full circle with building furniture and creating pieces that coordinate with my passion and former position as a chef. "
